Welcome to Year 6 and to Rosa Parks Class.
For those of you who are unaware of the name, Rosa McCauley Parks was an African-American activist in the civil rights movement best known for her pivotal role in the Montgomery bus boycott. The United States Congress has honoured her as, "The first lady of civil rights" and, "The mother of the freedom movement".
In the segregation era, when African-Americans were forced to sit together on buses, and in other areas of society simply banned from entering or given a section to be in together, Rosa had simply had enough and refused to give up her seat to a white man. It was this seemingly small action that had ripple right across America and then the wider world.
I was delighted that after a thorough process of learning about different significant people, they chose to name our class after such an inspiring individual. Yes, she was pivotal in the civil rights movement, but importantly for our class and community, it is great to recognise what was such a powerful and courageous woman.
It is important in our community to celebrate and champion women as equals to men and Rosa was therefore a perfect choice.
