MFL at Downsview Community Primary School 

The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

• understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
• speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
• can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
• discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied

Teaching and Learning

At Downsview, we endeavour to ensure that all children in KS2 receive high quality language learning in order to ensure that the aims above are fully covered and embedded. Due to the skills of our staff, we teach French as our chosen language following the HPLC scheme of work and using Tout Le Monde for resources and support where appropriate.

Even though it is not a national requirement to teach a language in KS1, years 1 and 2 learn simple phrases and every day words to build a foundation for the language learning they will receive from year 3 onwards.

Creative Curriculum

We believe in a creative curriculum at Downsview and know that for children to learn effectively, subjects should be linked to enhance the teaching and learning. Therefore, as well as discrete language learning, children participate in French music assemblies where all children in the school will learn simple French songs. All children in the school learn about not only the languages of other European countries, but equally so their culture, making links to British Values and SMSC.
